What Size (and Type) of Trailer Do You Actually Need

"What size trailer do I need" is one of the most common questions we get, and it's a fair one, because the honest answer depends on more than just the trailer, it depends on what type fits your load in the first place. Before you can talk size, it helps to know which of our three trailers is even the right starting point.

Start With The Job, Not The Trailer

Think about what you're actually moving before worrying about dimensions. A vehicle by itself is a different conversation than heavy equipment, and both are different from a mixed load of cargo, furniture, or gear. Once you know which category you're in, sizing gets a lot simpler.

The Car Hauler

This is your trailer for a single vehicle, a sedan, motorcycle, ATV, or non-running project car. Standard sedans and small SUVs fit comfortably without any special accommodation. Full-size trucks and larger SUVs need a bit more attention paid to both deck length and weight capacity, since they're heavier and longer than average. Motorcycles need less deck space overall but still need tie-down points suited to how a bike actually sits. And a non-running or lowered vehicle may need extra planning around winch use and ramp angle, so mention that when you call.

The Deck-Over Tilt Trailer

We're adding a 22-foot deck-over with a 16,000 pound GVWR to our lineup for anything that outgrows the car hauler, tractors, skid steers, other construction equipment, and larger vehicles or trucks that are simply too big or heavy for a standard car hauler setup. If your load falls into this range, weight capacity and deck length both matter more than they would for a regular car, so it's worth confirming both before you book.

The Utility Trailer

Our 16-foot tandem-axle utility trailer covers most everything else, yard debris, mowers and landscaping materials, furniture and appliances during a move, event equipment, ATVs or UTVs, kayaks or bikes, and similar mid-weight loads. This is usually the right call when your load is more about volume and variety than pure weight or vehicle-specific tie-down needs.

What Actually Determines Size

A few things matter regardless of which trailer you're looking at. Length and width need to fit your item with room for proper tie-down angles. Weight needs to stay within the trailer's rated capacity, cargo included. Your tow vehicle's own towing capacity needs to cover the combined weight of trailer plus load, since exceeding that creates real risk for braking and handling. And ground clearance matters for anything low to the ground, since a steep ramp angle can cause scraping on cars that sit low.

A Few Real Scenarios

A commuter sedan headed to a repair shop is an easy fit for the car hauler with plenty of margin either way. A full-size pickup or three-row SUV needs a closer look at weight rating specifically, since it can push closer to a smaller trailer's limits. A tractor moving between properties calls for the deck-over regardless of how it compares to a car in size, since the weight class is just different. And a load of yard debris plus a mower after a weekend of cleanup is a textbook utility trailer job.

Another common question is what happens if a load turns out to be heavier than expected once you're loading it. In that case, stop and call us before you finish tying it down, we'd rather help you find the right trailer than have you push a load past a safe limit.

One More Thing Worth Checking

Beyond the trailer itself, take a look at your own vehicle's hitch rating and wiring setup before you book, since that's the other half of the equation. A trailer sized perfectly for your load still needs a tow vehicle and hitch that can handle it safely.
